Choosing this individual hiking trip you experience the manifold sceneries and the uniqueness of the Way of St. James with your own eyes and at your own pace.
We divided the whole length of the hike into 5 sections, which you can book separately. Section 1 offers you two alternative routes across the Pyrenees. Section 1A starts on the French side of the Pyrenees in St. Jean-Pied-de-Port, a beautiful mountain village and famous starting point of the Spanish Way of St. James. Following the so-called French Way (Camino francés) via Roncesvalles, the pilgrimage route will finally lead you to Pamplona. Section 1B leads from Jaca, situated in the Spanish part of the Pyrenees, to Pamplona on the so-called Aragonese Way, a route full of cultural and natural sights.
Sections 2 to 5 basically cover the classic pilgrimage route of the “Camino francés”. This pilgrimage trail with its stunning scenery leads you through the wine regions of Navarra and La Rioja before reaching the old historic cities of Burgos and León, both former medieval residence cities of the Kings of Spain in times where the Moors were about to conquer the whole Iberian peninsula. Leaving those cities behind, the path continues through the green hills and mountains of Spain's most Northwestern province Galicia and finally ends in Santiago de Compostela, the destination of all pilgrims.
While traveling you walk at your own pace! Provided with our special information package (including detailed hiking guides, that also explain mayor cultural sights along the way, and detailed city maps) you plan your daily hikes completely individually! Just enjoy traveling, hiking, and discovering the secrets of the Way of St. James while we will take care of the rest: we book hotels with breakfast or half-board, and -if you wish- organize luggage transport for you. We will also be happy to provide you with flight information and/or flight tickets, and give you further advice on transportation by bus or train.
Character
This trip is designed for hikers interested in culture and/or religion. The daily hikes are based on approx. 25 km. You will have to master several climbs crossing mountains and hills, but, all in all, the total meters of ascent will not exceed 400 m per day (except for Section 4, 640 m); most of the time you will have to cover a lot less. The highest mountain top you pass is 1,516 m high (Section 4). Of course, you can also shorten your daily hikes by taking public buses, or taxis (on your own costs). You must be an experienced hiker to do this trip, and you should have traveled to foreign countries before and know how to get around in a country whose people often don't speak any foreign language.
